MEDITATIONS BY THE REVEREND MICHAEL J. MAGEE, MD:
- January 11, 2009: "Several Sagacious Persons from Persia"
- "We three kings of orient are!” We do not know really how many there were. We think there were three only because there were three gifts. And no where does scripture call them kings. We do not know precisely where they are from, but we know they are not from Judea, maybe Persia in present day Iran. ...read more
- December 28, 2008: "God Wraps Himself in Human Flesh"
- Today’s text reflects on the meaning of Jesus' coming into the world. Half of the New Testament is letters written by Paul. Paul writes today’s letter to a particular community, an oppressed people waiting for their liberation. Those of us who call Middle TN home might not understand Paul’s audience. ...read more
- December 21, 2008: "God’s Love Comes Down From Heaven"
- Today’s Gospel, today’s good news, is a story of impossibilities. Consider the impossibilities Mary faced in this story: She is a virgin and pregnant—she is having a child while she is a virgin? Impossible! No way! Won't happen! Joseph has to follow through on the marriage after he discovers Mary is pregnant? Impossible!

- December 14, 2008: "God’s Joy Comes Down From Heaven"
- Scott Peck, in his book The Road Less Traveled, begins with the statement, "Life is difficult." In a sequel to that book, he begins by saying: "Life is complex."
Some of us grieve over an illness. Some of us grieve the loss of a loved one. Some of us grieve unreconciled friendships or marital relationships. Some of us grieve our loneliness.

December 7, 2008: "God’s Peace Come Down From Heaven"
- I have a friend who took his son to Minnesota to see the headwaters of the Mississippi. In Minnesota he and his son stepped across those headwaters of the Mississippi River. It was no more than a tiny stream. It is amazing that a river so mighty can begin in such an inconspicuous way. Perhaps we have a similar experience as we read the first chapter to the Gospel of Mark.

- November 30, 2008: "Hope Comes Down From Heaven"
- Some tell us we are in the midst of a religious crisis. They cite as warrants that the secular world has changed its definition of a civil marriage, and favors a mother’s rights over her unborn child’s rights. But when it comes to providing for the poor and welcoming immigrants and beating swords into plowshares, they invoke the words “separation of church and state.”

- November 23, 2008: "Don’t Lose Your Head"
- The New Testament is full of the analogy of kings and kingdoms and yet, that isn’t very relevant to us in the United States who has never known anything except a congress and an elected president.

- November 16, 2008: "Toad Kissing"
- We gather together, God, as your faithful people, secure in salvation, drawn to our destiny. You are the light. You are love. Come, Lord Jesus. Wrath is not your intended destiny for our lives. You want to find us, rescue us, save us.

- November 9, 2008: "Out of Extravagance"
- We have all invited a friend to coffee or a meal. At first he said yes. Then, as the appointment date gets closer, your friend seems to have a better offer. You feel snubbed. One of your friends is angry with you. She stops returning your phone calls and your
e-mails. You feel snubbed.

October 26, 2008: "There Really is Enough"
- Compassion fatigue. We all suffer from it. Whenever we turn the news off because we cannot bear to see the devastation of hurricanes or war. Whenever we walk away from someone who is crying. Whenever we say, "I understand," not because we empathize, but to get someone to quit complaining. Whenever we look away from a homeless person under the bridge. Compassion fatigue. ...read more
October 19, 2008: "For You Always Have the Poor With You, and"
- Jesus tells his disciples: "For you always have the poor with you.” I went to a Sunday School class at another church a few years ago. On my way to church, a homeless man was standing at the corner stoplight. ...read more
- October 12, 2008: "Out of Her Poverty"
- I
was talking to one of my fellow physicians this week in the dining room, one who hoped to retire soon. I asked, "Does what happened in Wall Street this week bother you?" "Who me?" he replied, "I sleep like a baby! Every two hours I wake up and cry!" ...read more
- October 5, 2008: "The Pharisees and Herodians plotted"
